Question: Who is Dr. Nketia.

I am a pastor in Living word International Assembly, with my master’s in psychology. I am also an expect in parenting. A profession most people are not aware

Question: How do parents give themselves the best possible chance as well as give the kids the best possible chance to be happy.

Ans: Parenting is hard work and such it will not be easy. Just with any other job, there will times where you are excited to g to work. There are times that it will not be so. The happiness then lies in you realizing that you are caring for a human who has feeling and treating the kid just as you want to be treated.

Question : Why do most people mess up in parenting?

 Ans: Because it has happened to us. Parents pick their parenting style from their own parents. As such whatever way they are brought up is probably the way they will care for their kids whether it is effective or not.

Question : Is it important for kids to have healthy level of challenge?

Ans: Definitely. As parent you will make mistakes but, it is about minimizing the level of mistakes done. In order to challenge the kid, you need to know the strength and weakness of your kid. It is important ask the question; which is important? “what your child becomes (career) or who your child becomes?

Question : How do you discipline without damage?

Ans: The job of the parent is to create an environment that does not destroy them. The child must be heard no matter what the situation is. Old school mentality is a quick fix but gives temporal results. The goal is to make the child realize they are wrong not punish them to a point that they may be damaged; which can push them away from the parent.

Question : What is the best parenting style to adopt when developing decision making in children?

Ans: A child is like on a beam. They have to find their own path in life. The parent is like the one standing on the side making sure the child does not fall. They give a little push or support bu t do not walk the beam for the child. A combination of different parenting styles whiles evolving daily is the best parenting style to have.

Question: Should parents be involved in the decision making of teenagers?

Ans:  The frontal lobe are teenagers are not fully developed until their early 20s. Which means they would have already taken very important decision in their life. This also mean that teenager have not yet developed the full ability to see the consequences of the decisions they make. As such parents being involved in the decision making of teenagers is very important.

Question:  How can parent deals help teenagers when it comes to social pressure.

 Ans: Communication is key. Teenagers will always battle between the voice of parents and peers. The last thing a parent would want to do is to stop communicating. Helping teenagers build their own confidence will really help them resist the pressure from their peers.
