Interview

Interview questions:

Question: Who is Dr. Nketia.
I am a pastor in Living word International Assembly, with my master’s in psychology. I am also an expect in parenting. A profession most people are not aware

Question: How do parents give themselves the best possible chance as well as give the kids the best possible chance to be happy.

Ans: Parenting is hard work and such it will not be easy. Just with any other job, there will times where you are excited to g to work. There are times that it will not be so. The happiness then lies in you realizing that you are caring for a human who has feeling and treating the kid just as you want to be treated.

Question : Why do most people mess up in parenting?
Ans: Because it has happened to us. Parents pick their parenting style from their own parents. As such whatever way they are brought up is probably the way they will care for their kids whether it is effective or not.

Question : Is it important for kids to have healthy level of challenge?
Ans: Definitely. As parent you will make mistakes but, it is about minimizing the level of mistakes done. In order to challenge the kid, you need to know the strength and weakness of your kid. It is important ask the question; which is important? “what your child becomes (career) or who your child becomes?

Question : How do you discipline without damage?
Ans: The job of the parent is to create an environment that does not destroy them. The child must be heard no matter what the situation is. Old school mentality is a quick fix but gives temporal results. The goal is to make the child realize they are wrong not punish them to a point that they may be damaged; which can push them away from the parent.

Question : What is the best parenting style to adopt when developing decision making in children?
Ans: A child is like on a beam. They have to find their own path in life. The parent is like the one standing on the side making sure the child does not fall. They give a little push or support bu t do not walk the beam for the child. A combination of different parenting styles whiles evolving daily is the best parenting style to have.

Question: Should parents be involved in the decision making of teenagers?
Ans:  The frontal lobe are teenagers are not fully developed until their early 20s. Which means they would have already taken very important decision in their life. This also mean that teenager have not yet developed the full ability to see the consequences of the decisions they make. As such parents being involved in the decision making of teenagers is very important.

Question:  How can parent deals help teenagers when it comes to social pressure.
Ans: Communication is key. Teenagers will always battle between the voice of parents and peers. The last thing a parent would want to do is to stop communicating. Helping teenagers build their own confidence will really help them resist the pressure from their peers.

Final Reflection

This class has helped improved how I make researches. I know how to detect research articles that will support my research question. My skills for analysis papers has also improve. I think can now pick up any paper navigate my through detecting the tone behind the paper. Now i think am capable of coming up with a thesis and finding the right materials to help address the thesis statement. Especially the informative and research assignment really helped since I choose topics that I no background knowledge. Although I was very difficult in the beginning, combing he skills o fI now know how to implement quotes in my research papers. How to interpret and how fin quotes and citations that will support my claims or researches. In the long run, this will benefit me in gaining confidence and addressing any topic or writing about topic without fear of no having enough background information.,

Can different parenting styles affect decision making when it comes to social pressure
Decision making is a crucial tool that no one can avoid. From governments to families, to individuals, each one of us do take decisions whether important or insignificant. Does decision making depend on age? It seems our society accept that decision depends on age. Although everybody can make and should be allowed to make decisions, but at a certain age most adolescent are not trusted to make very important decisions. The ability for one to make quick-concise decisions especially when under pressure is very important. Unfortunately, most adolescents are almost always under pressure from society to make decision whether they have the ability to make the decision or not. This is clearly seen when it comes to voting, alcohol, accommodation, just to mention a few. If age is tied to when adolescents can make decisions, can they be trusted to make very important decisions automatically when they get to that age. This is when adults are to be involved in adolescent developing the skill of make decision that will help rescue them from the pressure that comes the society.
According to Brian C. Patridge, parents’ involvement in the decision making of adolescent is based on the emotional involvement as well as the inability to see long term consequences with the decision they make (Patridge, 2010). He states that the burden that parents have as involving or making their children make better decisions in the future but imitating their style of decision making also plays a huge role on why parents are involved the decision making of adolescents (Patridge,2010). This means parents are involved because they do believe adolescents might not have yet developed ability to separate impulsivity.

Parents’ involvement in a decision making of adolescents comes with its own controversies. Such as; being a parent doesn’t necessarily mean one has to master the act of making the right decision because everyone has at a point made terrible decisions. Making decisions is quite different from the right decision. Nathan fox, a participant in a research concerning how parenting affects neural response, states that “different parenting styles orchestrates a range of negative results associated with behavioral inhibition" (Fox, 564). This means that the parenting style used by parents has a big role on the social interaction software individuals which includes decision making.
Also, parenting style can cause social redraw which can lead to socioemotional difficulties. A research made on social withdrawal and parenting style outlined that “parenting of children who are withdrawn from society, mostly have parents that have tendency to using parenting styles that are bit harsh, oversoliticitous combined with overprotection (Zarra, 2014).
Social pressure is a big question most teenagers experienced but never have an actual answer to how to solve. The issue is that most people do not understand what social pressure is and the impact it has on our society.  Social pressure is a combination of different influences that teen experience. It includes peer pressure, academic pressure and socioeconomic pressure (Gustavo 2017). Peer pressure is probably the most common pressure teenagers experience, but it does not mean teenager do not experience other forms of pressure, particularly academic pressure. Social pressure can then be defined as the influence exerted on an individual by the society; it being friends, the community, or even social media against their will (Gustavo 2017). It

could be a rational argument, a persuasion or even conformity. This demand placed on teens mean they have to develop excellent decision skills in order not to be victims of social pressure. There is no doubt that social pressure has ruined and it’s still ruining the lives of hundreds of teenagers. A lot of campaign has been made to eradicate this cancer in our society. However, there are positives to social pressure. For example; healthy competition can cause students to improve on their grades. This means that the key is not to totally advocate against social pressure or discourage the pressure that comes from the society but to help teenagers develop exceptional decision skills to envisage long term effects of the decisions they make.
The most influential people in the life of a teenager is the parents. Parents have a huge responsibility of helping teenagers become not good but exceptional decision makers. This means that the parenting style employed by the parents have huge consequences in the development of teenagers into adulthood. The ability to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong is developed at a very early age, but this ability can be flawed when teenagers are pressured, stressed out or are just seeking for attention and approval from peers (Melanie 2009). For instance, a 16-year-old might know that smoking is bad for their health but might be less adept at choosing not to smoke when surrounded by coaxing peers.
The difference between what teenagers know and what they actually do can be elucidated in terms of “cold and hot situations” (Fiorenzo, 2013). Cold situations are decisions made when teens are in less stressed environment. During these periods, teenagers are able to think critically and envisage long–term effects of their decisions as such they make well-

reasoned and rational decisions (Fiorenzo, 2013).  Decisions made during high emotional or stressful environment can termed as “hot situations” (Fiorenzo, 2013). During this period, the long-term effects are usually not considered, and decisions are based on impulses and emotions rather than well- thoughtful reasons. The challenge then is to be able to still make great decision in spite of the “hot environment” teenagers may find themselves.

In addition to this, the frontal lobe of an individual is not fully developed until early o mid 20s. The frontal lobe is responsible for decision making, critical thinking and problem solving. “In the last decade, a growing body of longitudinal neuroimaging research has demonstrated that adolescence is a period of continual brain growth and change, challenging longstanding assumptions that the brain was largely finished by puberty” (Amanda, 2015). This shows that as we grow our frontal lobe also rows throughout our adolescence. This finding has prompted interest in questioning the ability of teens to make reasonable judgement. The frontal cortex, gray matter volumes reaches it peak at the age of 11 in girls and 12 in boys ().
How often do parents monitor their teen's social media?
Never
60%
Rarely
7%
Sometimes
16%
Often
12%
All the time
5%

From the image above, we see that most parent do not check on the amount time their ward is spending on social media. This can lead child to be victims of social pressure without parents being aware.
There is therefore huge responsibility on the part of parents to help teenagers develop this ability. There are basically four parenting styles that affect adolescents. The first being
authoritarian parenting. Authoritarian parents are strict and control most of the decisions made by adolescents (Swatz el al, 2008). The goal is to give children limited responsibilities. This means that authoritarian parents don not trust children to take or participate in any decision-making process. This parenting style means children have to learn by imitating their parent’s decision-making skills. The laws in such homes are to be obeyed at all cost. In authoritarian home, children are not heard, and parents cannot be challenged. Doing so could lead to immense punishment. Adolescents from authoritarian homes might develop traits such as following rules without questioning (Amanda, 2014). In some adolescents it may lead to low self-esteem as in the teenager might think that they are not smart or bright enough to make important decisions.
Too much control can also lead to teenagers becoming rebellious in the near future, developing resentment toward people in authority.

Also, authoritative parenting is another form of parenting. In authoritative home, the goal is to achieve assertiveness and control (Amanda, 2014). Although there are there are rules, communication is encouraged and allowed in such homes. Authoritative parenting as compared to authoritarian parenting, is concerned about how the child feels. Children are not restricted, and the goal is that the child would be able to make very good decision on his or her own.
Teenagers from such a home end up with the ability of making very important decisions on their own at a very early age. They also tend to navigate through life with the ability to envisage consequences that comes with the decision made.
Finally, there is the permissive and uninvolved parenting style. Permissive parenting is when parents involve children when setting rules (Amanda, 2014). Children are consulted before rules are made or enforced. Although rules are established thy are barely enforced. Parents are not assertive but rather lenient. Uninvolved parenting can be intentionally or unintentional. For instance, a parent in prison, or with mental issue might be involved in the developing of their child. Other parent decides not to involve themselves in the daily activities of the teenage; and such treat them as adults. Uninvolved parents have little knowledge on what goes on in the life of the child.
Parents then have huge role of finding the parenting style that will make their child acquire skills to make decision under pressure. My dad always says that you failed as individual but never fail as a father. The best way to prevent being a victim of social pressure Is to instill discipline and confidence. Most teens fall as victims because they have no confidence in their own ability of making rational decision. Instilling discipline and confidence is directly affected by

the parenting style employed. For instance, an authoritarian parent might fracture the confidence of their children by always meting out punishment when things go wrong. Confidence is built by improving on the self-esteem of the teenager. The more self-esteem you have, the more confidence you become. This more than words but involves, praising, encouraging, motivating and positive experiences. It is then the duty of parents to be very much aware and also provide the necessary support to stop the cancer of social pressure.

The article reveals the difference between adolescents and adults. In other words, what age can we consider someone as an adult. The article points out that there is a difference between adult’s brain and adolescents’ brain. This means that there is an evidence that adolescents will make decisions a little differently from adolescents. One of the reasons why this is evident according to the article is that adolescents tend to make decisions impulsively without considering the future consequences.

Can different parenting styles affect decision making when it comes to social pressure
Social pressure is a problem in our society. There are many reason why an individual will be pressurized by the society. Pressure most definitely affect us in our decision making.  Most often peer pressure is considered to be the factor that affect individuals the most. Social media also plays a huge role. Interestingly, most people do not focus on the effect a parenting style can have an individual when it comes social pressure, I believe this is a great topic to research about because if individuals are definitely affected by the parenting style of their parent, how does that translate when it come social pressure. This topic will be very much appreciate by both parents and teens. If parenting style affects decision making, then parents would want to adopt the best possible style to help their kids. On the other hand, kids will know and be able detect some parenting styles that is affecting them either positively or negatively.

Abortion Rights

Argumentative essay: First Draft
                                    Abortion Rights
On January 22, 2019, as I walked from the streets on Manhattan from a busy day at work, I was surprise to see that the number of people on the streets has exponentially increased. People were screaming, shouting and celebrating all over the city of New York. Pink smokes covered the whole city and traffics had intensified. This celebration was so intense that one might think that it will never end. A I walked through the crowd, I asked one person what the celebration is all about. With much enthusiasm and smiles, she informed me that a new reproductive act had been passed. Initially I could not believe it. I thought to myself are we really celebrating the killing of babies? Then I was informed that it is not a celebration for killing babies, but the celebration is based on the fact that women can now have abortion as an option.
Abortion is a very controversial topic which raises a lot of emotions when discussed. Unfortunately, the topic cannot be avoided. Most people get married to get babies. People spent a lot of money in order bear children. Others also detest protecting the right of babies because to them a baby cannot be considered human yet. There is a huge spectrum of people with different views and opinion on the topic of abortion. Planned parenthood was established help people understand and also deal with the emotional trauma that comes with not abortion just abortion but pregnancy as whole. Although Dr. Leana Wen who was appointed as Planned Parenthood Federation of America president in 2018, states that the core mission of planned parenthood abortion (Carter). This statement reveals  the bias involved in the pIanned parenthood as such I strongly stand against the idea of abortion and as such abortion should be illegal and our society must drown upon it.
There are so many reasons why one might support the idea of abortion. Some believe that abortion should be allowed because some circumstances such as; the mother's life been endangered or when a woman gets pregnant through horrible acts such as rape. I once spoke on the topic of abortion to group of students. One student in tears, challenged my views with on the topic and revealed that she was raped as a child. She wanted to keep the baby, but she knew that keeping the baby will affect t her emotionally. Statistics collected by Guttmacher institute shows that the number expectant mother that ate at risk of death is very low. In order words, the idea that abortion should be allowed just because some people go through complication is not valid. Of course, the low number does mean we have to ignore the people going through a such terrible trauma, but the solution is not allowing abortion. There are always exemptions to any rule. With that being there is the option of adoption.
As started earlier, the controversy on abortion stands on the question; when does life began? The genesis of life has been explained various forms through philosophy, religion, and sometimes morality. From figure 1, it obvious a baby has almost developed fully at week 16. The best way to explain when life began is through biology. There are two basic components that distinct on cell type from the other which is its molecular component and how the cell behaves (Condic, 2008). Both sperms and eggs are cells. But when they fuse together, it is evident that new pattern of behavior and a new molecular makeup is created. Although a sperm and egg are considered as cells, they do not carry the complexity of a zygote (Abort73.com). Minutes after a sperm fuses with an egg, there is a mechanism that blocks other sperm from fusing with the egg. It is important to notice that there is clear difference between organisms and cells. Cells are considered as the basic unit of life. An Amazing Video of a Living, First Trimester Unborn Baby
Figure 1
On the other hand, an organism is are defined as “a complex structure of interdependent and subordinate elements whose relations and properties are largely determined by their function on the whole (2) an individual constituted to carry on the activities of life by means of organs separate in function but mutually dependent: a living being” (Merriam – Webster). Organism can be considered to be living beings. A zygote carries features that makes it qualified as a living being. The zygote is not just any ordinary human cell. The zygote on its own begin to mature and grow into an embryo. The egg and sperm on their own do not mature or grow. Eggs disintegrate after month with no fertilization. There is no shadow of doubt that the sperm-egg fuse produces a coordinated interaction that is fundamental for the development of an organism. Zygote have much in common with a living organism than with a sperm cell or egg cell. This definitely shows that life begins at conception and aborting a zygote is no different than killing a human.
Furthermore, the question of the baby being part of the physiology of the mother also arises.  Again, the best way to ask this question is sticking to what science says. In living things, DNA carries the instruction code for the physiological development of an individual. It is obvious that a zygote is inside womb of the mother, so it is very easy to assume the baby is part mother’s physiology. It is important to note that an individual’s body part all share the same genetic code. As such if the baby is part of the physiology of the mother, they will both share the same genetic code. Interestingly, this is not the case. The genetic make up of the baby is distinct from the mothers’. The baby develops its own heart, brain and most importantly blood type. The baby will depend on the mother specifically for exchanges of gases to survive but just so as new born babies. New born babies depend on their mother to survive anyways. It is very unlikely for the new born to survive on its own if abandoned by parents. Do we have the right to kill new born babies just because they depend on their parent so survival? Dr. Albert Liley, father of fetology in his speech “the termination of pregnancy” stated that “physiologically, we must accept that concepts is, in a way large measure, in charge of pregnancy…... Biologically, at no stage do we have to concede the idea that a fetus is an appendage of the mother (Abort73.com, 2009).
.           Also, one of the claims for pro choice is that pregnancy can be dangerous for the health of the child or the mother. As stated earlier, few complications should never be a reason to totally accept abortion as the way to go. Women that go through abortion are more likely to lose their lives that women that go through labor. Although the longer keep the child, the riskier it is to abort a baby, but it does eliminate the risk involved. Abortion is far more dangerous and has cause large number of deaths, mental and physical damage to a lot of women.
According Guttmacher institute, who compiled statistical data on abortion in the United states I. 2017, states that approximately 862,320 abortion to place in 2017. The data showed than less than 0.5% participants of abortion were victim of rape. Abortion done because health issues accounted for 7%, which included fetal health problems and physical health problem to the mother (The case against abortion) This data clearly shows that the number women aborting because of complication and rape so few that it is not really support the claim for legalizing such a cruel act.
The topic of abortion really raises a lot argument. With that been said, it is very important to allow science to determine why it is inhuman to abort babies. Most people say a man is not in the right position to have an opinion on this topic. Just as with crime, every citizen has the right to voice their opinion. If we are ready to do whatever we can to save new born babies no matter how critical their health condition might be. We can take it a step further and save babies even if they have not been born yet.  Our judiciary system enforces that murdering a pregnant woman is a double murder but when the mother chooses to abort the baby, they do so as their right. All life must be treated equally, irrespective of how many years, week, whether in the womb or outside the womb.

With much enthusiasm and smiles, she informed that a new reproductive act had been passed. Initially I could not believe it. I thought to myself are we really celebrating the killing of babies.
Abortion is a very controversial topic which raises a lot of emotions when discussed. Unfortunately, the topic cannot be avoided. Most people get married to get babies. People spent a lot of money in order bear children. Others also detest protecting the right of babies. There is a huge spectrum of people with different views and opinion on the topic of abortion. Planned parent was established help people understand and also deal with the emotional trauma that comes with abortion. Although all groups have legitimate reason to hold onto their believes, emotions and feelings cannot be the only reason to stand for or against abortion. I stand against the idea of abortion and as such abortion should be illegal and our society must drown upon it.
There are so many reasons why one might support the idea of abortion. Some believe that abortion should be allowed because some circumstances such the mother's life been endangered or when a woman gets pregnant through horrible acts such as rape. I once spoke on the topic of abortion to group of students. One student in tears, challenged my views with on the topic and revealed that she was raped as child. She wanted to keep the baby but she knew that keeping the body will affect t her emotionally. Well data shows that the number expectant mother that ate at risk of death is very low. In order words, the idea that abortion should be allowed just because some people go through complication is not valid. Of course, the low number does mean we have to ignore the people going through a such terrible trauma, but the solution is not allowing abortion. There are always exemptions to any rule.
Stance for Abortion
1.      Biological reason – when does life began? Is the baby part of the woman physiology?
2.      The question of choice: does the woman have the right to abort the baby.
3.      What is the right time to abort.
4.      The right of the unborn.

Reflection of Informative Report

This informative essay was very challenging for me.    I think  a reason  is because  of the topic  i  chose.     I didn't have much information  prior to the  essay so a lot research was  done in order to write the  essay. With that being said, i will say i have gain   much skilled when it comes researching about topics also  actually writing to make    reader engaged, informed and  entertained at the same time. In the further i will really look up to writing a lot   informative essays,

Informative Report
                                                     How the Universe Began
There are questions that have crossed our minds one day or the other. We ask questions such as where do we come from? What is our purpose on earth? And finally, where do we go after we die? Although these questions are very important, it is impossible to answer if we do not know how the universe began in the first place. At what point did our universe begin. Was there a time the universe never existed? There has been so may theories proposed by scientist as the possible theory responsible for the beginning of this universe. Most scientists believe that Darwin's theory of evolution really explains our existence as humans but what it does not explain is the beginning of the universe. In order words, if we don’t know how the universe began how certain are we, that evolution is even right.
Theories such as the panspermia; which means life came from a different planet has been used as one of the possible theories for the beginning of the universe (Scharf). There is also the theory from the Bible that states; the world was created by God. The big bang theory is probably the most trusted and respected theory in today’s world. The big bang theory is a theory that proposes a possible way the universe was made without the involvement of a creator (Strickland, 2008). It is important to note that just as the name implies; it is just a theory. The pages of this theory are still been written and new information comes out every year.
Background to the Big Bang Theory
The big theory was proposed by a Belgian priest named George’s Lemantre in 1920 (Britannica). He suggested that the universe probably began from a single primordial atom (Britannica). Although this theory was first proposed by George Lemaitre, it was Edwin Hubble that observed this theory. Edwin's theory was extracted from Albert Einstein's equation of general relativity; which describes the basic relationship between gravitational force and energy (Smith). Scientist propose that if we look back at the universe one second after the big bang, we will discover huge number of protons, neutrons, positrons and photons. This will be followed by the cooling down of the universe. The cooled down universe causes neutrons to decay into protons or electrons. The continuous cooling of the universe will then cause electrons to combine with nuclei to form neutral atom (Chow). The neutral atoms will absorb free electrons causing an afterglow. These after glow or photons are known as Cosmin Background Radiation
Evidence for The Big Bang Theory
Although the big bang theory is accepted by most scientists, it must still be tested to determine its reliability and authenticity. First and foremost, observed recession of galaxies is one evidence that support the big bang theory. Most astronomers believe that Hubble's relationship between the distance to galaxies and their recession velocity is due to the expansion of space (Britannica). If there is an expansion of space, then scientists assume that the spaces between galaxies were much closer. If the galaxies were much closer could it be that the galaxies were together. Something might have happened that caused the galaxies to separate and move far from each other. For example, galaxies closer to our planet are bigger than the ones farther away.
Another evidence for the big bang theory will be cosmic microwave background radiation.  In 1992 NASA, launched a mission to research and investigate the cosmic background radiation. The team was named Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE). The COBE team announced that they have discovered a primordial hot and cold spot in cosmic background radiation (John Mather and George Smoot). The spot discovered are related to the gravitational field in the early universe. Another mission was set up to continue the work done by COBE. With sophisticated and improved equipment, they survey the sky and discovered that a map of the sky with hot and cold regions. All these discoveries can only be explained by the big bang theory. In the figure below, picture of earth showing the different temperature of the background radiation. The hot spots are marked red, the cold spots are marked blue.
Universe Fate-1 Accelerating Universe
Figure 1:
Also, the amount of activity must have been greater in the past than in our present time. Unlike the steady state theory that states that the earth will remain the same with time, the big bang theory suggests a universe that will evolve as time goes on (Kaku, Michio).
Shortcomings of the Big bang theory
Although there are plenty of evidence that suggest that the early might have gone   through a rapid expansion, there is no direct evidence that the universe arose from a single atom.  According to Silva Neres, a physicist, “the big bang is nothing but a theory”.
The big bang theory is the most accepted explanation for the beginning of the earth. In its simplest way, the big bang theory states that the earth started with a small singularity about 13.8 billion years ago. Although the big bang theory is really accepted among scientist all over the world, it still stands as theory. Current instruments will not allow this theory to be tested. This is one of the biggest issues with this theory. As such mathematical formulas and models was what was used to come to this conclusion; that the universe started as a singularity.
Effects of the Big Bang Theory
According to NASA, few seconds after the universe started, the temperature must have been around 10 billion degrees Fahrenheit. Obviously this condition is not conducive for life but it is a perfect condition for the universe to expand. This allows us to determine or guess the age of the universe. Without the big bang theory, we will have no idea that there was a beginning. As such will never be able to predict the age of the universe.
As stated earlier, the big bang theory states that the universe is neither flat nor unchanging but constantly evolving and expanding over time. The key to determining the age or when exactly the big bang occurred is for scientist to work backwards. If the earth is expanding. Then we track its history backwards. This is exactly the same as an investigator at a crime scene, who works backwards to determine what really happened at the scene. Scientists, in order to do this, must determine the proportion of dark matter to dark energy. Dark matter is a term used for the 80 percent of mass in the universe that scientists cannot directly observe (Redd). Dark energy on the other hand, is an energy that counteracts gravity, causing the universe to expand. This is very difficult to do because they’re very little information about dark energy and dark matter. Also these two factors are very hard to measure. “Whiles dark energy is a face that accounts for the expanding universe, dark matter explains how group of objects function together. Figure 2 shows an area observed of dark matter.
Dark matter galaxy clusters
Figure 2: Star clusters in Abell 1689, an area observed for dark matter research via NASA/Hubble
Figure 3
There is no doubt t that scientist will keep on expanding on the topic of the big theory. The big bang theory has made much easier to understand how the universe work. We can estimate the age of the universe. “It has been calculated that roughly 25-27% of the universe is dark matter” (Kaku, Michio). Dark energy makes up about 68-70% of the known universe. Scientists are now investigating whether dark matter is older the big bang. The results could shift our knowledge on how the universe began entirely
